Every result
Choose an election and a race. Official City of Vancouver counts from 1996; the Canadian Municipal Elections Database (built from City Archives records) before that. Ward-by-ward until 1935, city-wide since.
Notes
At-large voting
Since 1936 every voter can mark up to ten names for council, seven for park board and nine for school board; the top vote-getters win. Percentages in those races are shares of all votes cast in that race, so a councillor “with 40%” was marked on roughly 40% of the ballots that voted for council at all.
Turnout definitions
The City reports turnout as ballots cast over registered voters, including the UBC and University Endowment Lands voters who may only vote for school trustees. Where the City published a figure it is shown; otherwise it is computed the same way from the file.
Before 1996
Results come from the Canadian Municipal Elections Database (CC0), which digitised Wayne Madden’s compilation and the City Archives’ election scrapbooks. Only mayor and council are covered before 1990; park and school board results for 1990 and 1993 are from Wikipedia. Registered-voter counts were not recorded.
Acclamations and quirks
Early mayors were sometimes acclaimed (no vote), and until 1940 half the aldermen were elected each year for two-year terms, so odd-year “elections” elect only part of council. The 1922 file records two mayoral contests; the second was a special election.
Not shown (yet)
Per-voting-place results exist in the City files from 1996 and are kept in the data; a neighbourhood map is on the to-do list. Candidate spending (Elections BC disclosures since 2014) is not included.
